Good dental habits can be fun if taught right
Overusing toothpaste and brushing too hard are common pitfalls among younger children. Dentists in Delta Dental Plans Associations network (Delta Dental) encourage parents to supervise and correct their childrens dental habits. Parents with children under 6 years of age should brush their childs teeth because young children lack the manual dexterity required to brush teeth effectively.
"Recent statistics point out that up to 73 percent of children use too much toothpaste," says Robert Dennison, DMD, Chairperson, Dental Policy, Delta Dental. "A pea-size amount of toothpaste is optimal since large amounts create foam and make it difficult for children to brush. Also, children should be taught to spit out toothpaste because habitually swallowing it can lead to a condition known as fluorosis in which spots caused by too much fluoride may appear on their teeth."
Brushing too hard can push the gums up and pose problems in preventing tooth decay. Since tooth decay occurs faster in children, parents need to take precautions to protect their youngsters beautiful smiles.
Parents should also remember to put mouthwashes in a safe place. Children are easily attracted to minty smells and colorful mouthwashes. The alcohol in mouthwashes can be harmful to children.
By playing a positive, active role in childrens tooth brushing, parents are encouraging children to learn good habits and maintain good dental hygiene. To make the experience enjoyable, here are some tips:
-
Place a proper "step-up stand" that allows the child to look over the sink counter
-
Allow the child to choose his/her toothbrush, especially for colors and/or themes
-
Select a toothbrush that has soft bristles a hard toothbrush can cause gums to bleed
-
Remind children not to use too much toothpaste or swallow toothpaste
-
Floss your childrens teeth every night children lack the dexterity to floss properly
-
If children refuse to brush, they need to be encouraged to at least rinse the mouth with water.
These tips will help parents promote and foster healthy dental care for the whole family and also make brushing and flossing a fun routine.
